Madame Emery ve kızı Geneviève Fransa'nın Normandiya bölgesinde küçük bir liman şehri olan Cherbourg'da küçük bir butikte şemsiye satarak geçinmektedirler. Film 1957 yılında 17 yaşındaki Geneviève ile 20 yaşındaki oto tamircisi Guy Foucher'nin birbirlerine aşık olmaları ile başlar. Çift evlilik planları yaparken Guy'ın annesi buna karşı gelir. Bir süre sonra askere alınan Guy Cezayir'e savaşa gönderilir. Guy uzakta iken hamile kaldığını öğrenen Geneviève zengin bir kuyumcu olan Roland Cassard'ın evlilik teklifini kabul etmek zorunda kalır. Yaralandığı için erken terhis edilen Guy, Cherbourg'a döndüğünde Geneviève'in gitmiş olduğunu görür.
