Film 1943 yılında 2.Dünya Savaşı'nın Kuzey Afrika cephesi ile başlar.Savaş tarihinin en eksantrik komutanlarından biri olan Tankçı General George S. Patton Jr.(George C. Scott) 'ın karşısında Çöl Tikisi lakaplı ünlü Alman Mareşali Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler) vardır.Askeri dehasının yanı sıra savaş tarihini de çok iyi bilen Patton,Rommel'in yazdığı kitapları da okumuştur ve onun taktiklerini kullanarak 'Çöl Tilkisi' ni Kuzey Afrika'dan sürer.Bu başarısı üzerine korgeneralliğe terfi ettirilerek Sicilya 'ya gönderilir.Burada Müttefiklerin diğer bir ünlü komutanı İngiliz mareşali Montgomery (Michael Bates) ile bir rekabete girer.Kimi zaman üstlerinin emirlerine itaatsizlik eden,bencil,boşboğaz ve küfürbaz bir asker olan Patton'un bu huyları onun askeri dehasının önüne geçer.Disiplin takıntısı yüzünden bir hastane teftişi sırasında korkaklıkla suçladığı hasta bir eri tokatlaması ve ona herkesin içinde hakaretler yağdırması kariyerini tehlikeye sokar.
