Hoci Harry Crumb pochádza z rodiny slávnych, závideniahodne bystrých detektívov, on sám, žiaľ, žiadnym z talentov svojich predkov nedisponuje – má neprehliadnuteľnú nadváhu a je síce dobrák, no neuveriteľne naivný, roztržitý a tak trochu pripečený. Skrátka a dobre sa na post detektíva vôbec nehodí, a tak nečudo, že pracuje v tej najzapadnutejšej pobočke rodinnej detektívnej agentúry, kde jeho nemohúcnosť a bezradnosť nie je až tak na očiach. Nuž a práve jeho temer neexistujúce detektívne vlohy sa jeho súčasnému šéfovi Eliotovi Draisenovi náramne hodia pre jeho zvrhlý plán – Harryho totiž poverí prešetrením únosu dcéry kalifornského multimilionára, v ktorom má sám svoje špinavé prsty...
