Пожилая дама рассказывает жуткую историю случайному попутчику в поезде, который по иронии судьбы оказался ученым, изучающим законы теории вероятности. Ее рассказ с позиции профессионального интереса был весьма интригующим: возможно ли, чтобы в поселке, где живет дама, за короткий промежуток времени произошло несколько ужасных несчетных случаев? Вероятно, нет. Это подтверждает и сама старушка, настаивающая, что по крайней мере три из этих смертей были убийствами, и что каждый раз перед очередной смертью она видела странную ухмылку на лице одного и того же человека. Через четверть часа после своего рассказа она погибла. Ее попутчику предстоит разобраться во всем происшедшем, потому как смерть дамы под колесами автомобиля через 15 минут после такого разговора с точки зрения теории вероятности никак не может быть случайной.
