마티 디버기(로브 라이너 분)은 몇개의 광고와 영화를 찍은 감독이다. 그러던 그가 밴드에 관한 다큐멘터리를 기획했을 무렵 영국의 '스파이널 탭'이란 밴드가 미국 투어를 준비 중이란 소식을 접한다. 그는 곳 그들을 밀착 취재하며 '힘들게 일하는' 헤비메탈 밴드에 대한 다큐멘터리를 완성한다.
