Estate 1953. Iran. Sullo sfondo il colpo di stato, guidato dagli americani e appoggiato dagli inglesi, per deporre il Primo Ministro, democraticamente eletto, Mohammad Mossadegh e restaurare il potere dello Shah. In primo piano le storie di quattro donne iraniane di classe sociali diverse che si intrecciano e si ritrovano insieme. Fakhri, donna di mezza età intrappolata in un matrimonio senza amore, deve fare i conti con i sentimenti che prova nei confronti di una vecchia fiamma. Zarin, giovane prostituta, cerca di fuggire dal suo destino. Munis, giovane donna politicamente molto attiva, resiste all'isolamento a cui il fratello, religioso tradizionalista, vorrebbe obbligarla e decide di non sposarsi con l'uomo che lui vorrebbe imporle. Faezeh, amica di Munis, resta incurante dei disordini nelle strade e sogna soltanto di sposare il dispotico fratello di Munis, ma un giorno viene stuprata e la sua vita cambia radicalmente...
