Danyila a csecsen háborúból frissen leszerelt kiskatona. Szentpétervárra (vagy ahogy a névváltoztatás után mondják: "Pityerbe") megy, hogy istenített bátyjától kérjen segítséget az újrakezdéshez. Először kissé idegenül mozog a városban, hiszen teljesen más ez a világ, mint amit pár évvel korábban maga mögött hagyott.
