Inspirada en hechos reales. En el valle de Vajont (Italia) se está construyendo la presa más alta del mundo (163 metros) y se da por supuesto que propiciará el turismo y la prosperidad de los pueblos circundantes. Cuando la obra alcanza más de cien metros de altura, la empresa descubre una tremenda hendidura que podría provocar un desmoronamiento. A pesar de ello, se decide seguir adelante, sin pensar en las posibles consecuencias. El resultado es aterrador: el 9 de Octubre de 1963, la montaña se desliza hacia el agua a una velocidad de 80 kilómetros por hora. Seis localidades quedan inundadas, dejando más de dos mil muertos.
