Zwei Mütter, ein Schicksal: Sarah und Linda sind zur gleichen Zeit auf der Entbindungsstation des Medical Center der Uni von Virginia. Ihre Söhne kommen am selben Tag zur Welt und werden aus Versehen vertauscht. Erst nach achtzehn Monaten wird dieser verhängnisvolle Fehler offenbar. Die allein erziehende Linda hat Ärger mit ihrem Ex, denn dieser zweifelt seine Vaterschaft an. So lässt sie einen Bluttest machen und dessen Ergebnis öffnet ihr die Augen. Linda trifft nun Sarah, die Mutter ihres leiblichen Kindes und die beiden Frauen versuchen gemeinsam, eine Lösung zu finden. Sie beschließen die Babies zu behalten, die sie aufgezogen und lieben gelernt haben. Und sie schließen einen ungewöhnlichen Kompromiss, der weitreichende Konsequenzen für ihr Familienleben haben wird. Als eines der Kinder krank wird und der Vater sich einmischt, ist der Gang vor Gericht jedoch nicht mehr zu vermeiden.
