Geschwisterbande bleiben bestehen, auch wenn Lebensumstände sich auseinanderentwickeln. Die alleinerziehende Mutter und Bankangestellte Sammy glaubt das fest und freut sich, als ihr kurzzeitig verschwundener Bruder wieder auftaucht und seinen Besuch ankündigt. Terry ist ein charmanter, aber auch unzuverlässiger Wandervogel, der von Stadt zu Stadt zieht, sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs durchbringt und nach einer Schlägerei auch mal im Gefängnis landet. Dennoch hofft Sammy, dass Terry sich ein wenig um ihren 8-jährigen Sohn Rudy kümmern wird. Die beiden freunden sich tatsächlich sofort an, auch Sammy wird durch die Anwesenheit ihres Bruders dazu inspiriert, aus ihrer Routine auszubrechen und ihre Lebensart zu überdenken. Doch immer wieder stoßen Terrys Verantwortungslosigkeit und Impulsivität auf Sammys Disziplin und Verkrampfung, und nach einer neuerlichen Dummheit sitzt Terry wieder auf dem Rücksitz eines Polizeiwagens...
