1977: Thomas Kinkade kehrt in den Semesterferien in seine Heimatstadt zurück, um das Weihnachtsfest im Kreise seiner Familie zu erleben. Wie jedes Jahr rüstet sich das malerische Städtchen Placerville für die Feiertage. Und auch Big Jim ist wieder einmal schwer damit beschäftigt, sich für den Dekorations-Wettstreit mit seinen Nachbarn zu rüsten. Doch nicht alles ist in diesem Jahr wie immer: Thomas' Mutter steckt in finanziellen Nöten und dem Elternhaus droht der Zwangsverkauf. Und auch um Thomas' langjährigen Freund und Mentor Glen steht es alles andere als gut. Der einst erfolgreiche Künstler sieht sich mit den Tücken des Alterns konfrontiert, als ihm fortschreitende geistige und physische Gebrechlichkeiten das Malen zusehends erschweren. Als Thomas den Auftrag annimmt, für die Gemeinde ein Wandgemälde zu schaffen, muss er sich daher vor allem auf seine eigene künstlerische Eingebung verlassen.
