Vi er nået til sommeren 1930. Den amerikanske krise efter Wall Street-krakket begynder at brede sig til Europa Men det mærker man endnu ikke meget til på det lille badehotel, hvor fru Andersen og hendes piger slår dørene op for de kære stamgæster, der igen i år har sat hinanden stævne for at nyde sommeren og det muntre ferieliv. Men bag de lukkede døre er virkeligheden en ganske anden. Grosserer Madsen er fallit og kæmper en desperat kamp for at komme tilbage i forretningssporet. Grev Ditmar kæmper for at bevare sit ægteskab for at skjule sin homoseksualitet. Skuespiller Weyse har et hemmeligt forhold til en purung skuespiller-elev, og fabrikant Frigh får vækket den midtlivskrise, hans kone ellers troede var under kontrol. Alle er optaget af hver deres og lægger slet ikke mærke til, at der er store forandringer på vej hos vores tyske naboer.
