Bobby Garfield kunne umuligt vide, hvad advarslen gik ud på. Men inden den sommer, hvor han fylder 11 år, er ovre, finder han ud af det... og han mønstrer et mod og en overbærenhed, han aldrig havde troet, at han havde. Anthony Hopkins har hovedrollen i denne nostalgiske og atmosfærefyldte film, som foregår i en lille by i Connecticut i 1960. Han spiller Ted Brautigan, en mystisk, mentalt begavet enspænder, som bliver læremester og faderskikkelse for Bobby, da han benytter sig af drengens hjælp til at slippe af med de dunkle skikkelser, som prøver at få magten over Ted. Filmen er instrueret af Scott Hicks ("Shine") med manuskript af William Goldman ("Misery") baseret på Stephen Kings fortællinger. "Hearts in Atlantis" er "en helt vidunderlig film" (Joel Siegel, Good Morning America).
